1. What spar sizes worked well for the 4 ft kite in light winds? Maybe I can answer this one myself. The straws I have look like they will accept 1/8" dowels but not 1/4" dowels.
I used 1/4" dowel for the spine. Look for the straightest, stiffest you can find, for the price. 3/16 for cross spars. Look for balanced, evenly bending dowels for this.
I used recycled straws. Look at 7/11 store for larger diameter straws. Or Phillips 66 station drink bar. Or Quick Trip. Probably other places, too. Pick up a couple at various places for later use. Maybe take a scrap piece of dowel for sizing purposes.
2. Did you make any of the spars removable?
All spars are removable. I just remove the spine for storage, but the cross bows are removable in order to replace in case of breakage.
How did you accomplish this with the straw pocket method?
I just put the straw pockets at each end of all the spars.
I'm thinking of taping the cross spars to the sail and making the spine removable. I would go with the removable cross spars for reasons stated above. They are not difficult to install.
Maybe the 1/8" dowels bend enough to get them into the pockets after passing through tunnels?
I used 3/16"cross spars. No problem with bending them.
3. Did you bow cross spars, or let the wind bend some thin dowels to create the bow?
I bowed them with bow lines.
If bowed, how did you attach the bow strings without tearing the sail?
I used a prussic knot on each end and fastened them on each end of the cross spars. There is no interaction with the sail.
Did you hitch the ends of the bow strings directly to the spars? Yes, see above.
